New Delhi. It may be the 21st century, but today’s children like rap and hip hop songs. But, not only the films of the 70s-80s-90s, but their songs are also liked a lot even today. Just like there is a story behind the writing of a film, there are similar interesting stories for the songs of films. How many songs will be there in the film, in which situation, who will sing and how those songs will be filmed, all this is decided after the story of the film. Do you know that the most romantic song of the century was written by Javed Akhtar in 5 minutes, which was composed by RD Burman in 5 seconds. This song is none other than ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh…’ But there is an amazing story behind this song. Which has been narrated by Farah Khan.
Farah Khan has revolutionised choreography in Bollywood and has given us some of the most memorable hook steps, including songs like ‘You Are My Sonia’, ‘It’s the Time to Disco’, ‘Ek Pal Ka Jeena’ and many more. Choreographer and director Farah Khan recently expressed her love for the legendary composer RD Burman.
‘Main Hoon Na’ is influenced by RD Burman’s music
After listening to ‘Dum Maaro Dum’, she fell deeply in love with his music. She said that her love for the great musician influenced the music of her film ‘Main Hoon Na’. In a conversation with Radio Nasha, she spoke openly about RD Burman’s music. Farah said that for my second film, ‘1942: A Love Story’, when I came to know that RD Burman was composing music, I got excited. I used to go for music recording like a chamchi and I was present during every sitting. For me, it was like seeing the God of music.
This film was released in 2004.
Javed Akhtar had forgotten how to write a song
During this, she shared an interesting anecdote from the making of the film ‘1942: A Love Story’, for which Burman was composing the music and Javed Akhtar was writing the lyrics. She recalled the making of the song ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’. Farah said that during a music meeting with director Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who played the role of assistant in the film, lyricist Javed Akhtar arrived without any preparation.
When Javed Akhtar reached the meeting with a blank paper
Farah further said, Javed uncle came in with a blank paper. He hadn’t written anything. He had forgotten. He mostly didn’t do his homework. He said, ‘Accha kya hai, tell me again.’ He was narrated the sequence where Anil Kapoor’s character sees Manisha Koirala for the first time and falls in love with her. He called his assistant and instructed him, ‘Accha start writing’ and Javed uncle started speaking, ‘Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga, jaisa khilta gulab, jaisa shayar ka khwaab, jaisa ban mein hiran.’ He had written five more lines like this. We picked the best lines and he immediately gave the piece of paper and said, ‘Yeh lo gaya gana hoga’.
The film ‘1942: A Love Story’ was released in 1994.
The tune of the song was ready in 5 seconds
Farah Khan further told that everyone was surprised when RD Burman took his harmonium and composed the tune instantly. Recalling those moments, Farah said, ‘When I think about it, I get goosebumps. Javed uncle wrote it in 5 minutes and Dada (RD Burman) composed the tune in 5 seconds. The best things are made like this.’ This song is still one of the most romantic songs. An evergreen song.
These are the lyrics of the song
ho o … when I saw a girl I felt like this
When I saw a girl, I felt as if
like a blooming rose
A poet’s dream, like
a bright ray, like
A deer in a forest, like
like a moonlit night
soft talk, like
There should be a burning lamp in the temple, yes!
Oh… I felt like this when I saw a girl!
Yes, when I saw a girl, I felt like this
When I saw a girl, I felt as if
morning look, like
like the winter sun
the tune of a veena, like
the life of colours, like
The vines bend like
the play of waves, like
Come let the cool breeze bring fragrance, yes!
Oh… I felt like this when I saw a girl!
Yes, when I saw a girl, I felt like this
When I saw a girl, I felt as if
like a dancing peacock
like a silk thread
the melody of fairies, like
the fire of sandalwood, like
sixteen adornments, like
a splash of juice, like
The intoxication slowly increases, yes!
Oh… I felt like this when I saw a girl!
When I saw a girl I felt like this!
Vidhu Vinod Chopra also narrated the story
The track became one of the most iconic romantic numbers in Bollywood, but director Vidhu Vinod Chopra recently revealed that if Javed was not there, the track would not have been included in the album. Vidhu Vinod Chopra also talked about this during the promotion of Sonam Kapoor’s film ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’. He also said the same thing about the process of making the song that this song was ready in five to six minutes.
