Lifestyle vehicles like the VW California are currently very popular. They are not only rented for vacation trips, but are also used privately on a daily basis. The converted Bulli called the California has been ahead of the game for decades and is basically “the camper” in this class. The latest model is now being launched in 2024.

As Volkswagen is currently revamping its van lineup, the basis for the California is also changing. The new model will no longer be based on the Transporter (currently the T6.1), but on the new and independent Multivan. The basis for this is the long version with a length of 5.17 meters, a width of 1.94 meters and a height of 1.99 meters. The wheelbase is 3.12 meters. This makes the new California almost 30 centimeters longer than its predecessor. The width and height, however, have hardly changed – and that’s a good thing, because with these dimensions you can still park the vehicle in narrow and low underground garages or at home without any problems. For additional driver assistance, the California is equipped with the latest systems that can also be found in numerous car models.

Three engine options available

Another innovation is the drive options. In addition to the classic diesel engine (a 2.0 TDI with 150 hp), there is also a petrol version (the 2.0 TSI with 204 hp) and a plug-in hybrid version. The latter combines a 1.4-liter four-cylinder with an electric motor. The system output is 218 hp and the purely electric range is around 44 kilometers – depending on the equipment and driving style. The California will also be available for the first time with all-wheel drive.

New interior layout

Like its predecessor, the new model will be available in different versions (“Beach”, “Beach Tour”, “Beach Camper”, “Coast” and “Ocean”), which differ in their interior equipment. The “Ocean” is the top model and is equipped with all the amenities that make a camper’s heart beat faster. The side sliding doors (now also on the driver’s side) ensure easy entry. The attached extendable awning provides shade for outdoor grilling. There is an additional sunshade for the front seats. The kitchen has been redesigned and the refrigerator is now located at the front of the row, so it is now also accessible from the outside. In addition to a gas stove, an induction hob can also be ordered as an option. Instead of a back seat, there are now two removable individual seats. The driver and passenger seats can be rotated 180 degrees. With the fold-out table, you can also eat comfortably inside if it rains outside. Up to four people can sleep in the “Ocean”, two on the lower bed and two above under the extendable roof. All camper functions can be controlled in the cockpit, via a display in the C-pillar or via an app conveniently from your smartphone. There are of course also several power sockets and USB ports.
