World football is mourning the loss of one of its greatest players. Brazil’s three-time world champion Pelé died on Thursday at the age of 82, his family confirmed. He had been ill for some time and recently had to be treated in hospital.

“Everything we are is because of you. We love you forever. Rest in peace,” his daughter Kely Nascimento wrote on Instagram. According to the Albert Einstein Hospital, Pele, who had long battled cancer, died of “multiple organ failure.”

A black and white photo of the football legend could be seen on Pelé’s official Twitter account at 8:18 p.m. German time. “Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pele, who passed away peacefully today. Love, love and love, forever,” it read.

The exceptional player, who came from a poor background, became world champion in Sweden in 1958, Chile in 1962 and Mexico in 1970. At the 1958 World Cup finals, he scored two goals in a 5-2 triumph in the final against hosts Sweden. The 17-year-old was carried out of the stadium, crying uncontrollably on his teammate’s shoulders.
