Robert Lewandowski Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich have been named World Footballer of the Year for the second time in a row. The 33-year-old Polish international beat record winner Lionel Messi from Paris St. Germain and Liverpool’s Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah at the gala “The Best FIFA Football Awards”.
With 41 goals last season, the Munich striker surpassed the Bundesliga season record of the legendary “Bomber” Gerd Müller from the 1971/1972 season, which was long thought to be unattainable. In the 2021 calendar year, with a total of 43 goals, he was one goal better than Müller in 1972.
Berger and Neuer come away empty-handed
Thomas Tuchel has been named FIFA World Coach of the Year 2021. The team manager of Champions League winners Chelsea FC won the election against Roberto Mancini from European champions Italy and Pep Guardiola from Manchester City. The women’s title went to Emma Hayes, also from Chelsea FC.
From a German perspective, Jupp Heynckes (2013), former national coach Joachim Löw (2014) and Jürgen Klopp (2019 and 2020) had previously won the title, which has been awarded since 2010.
Ann-Kathrin Berger and national team captain Manuel Neuer, on the other hand, came away empty-handed. The 2014 world champion and the national goalkeeper came in third place in the elections for world goalkeeper and world goalkeeper behind the winners Edouard Mendy from Chelsea FC and Christiane Endler from Olympique Lyon.
