Robert Lewandowski Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich have been named World Footballer of the Year for the second time in a row. The 33-year-old Polish international beat record winner Lionel Messi from Paris St. Germain and Liverpool’s Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah at the gala “The Best FIFA Football Awards”.

With 41 goals last season, the Munich striker surpassed the Bundesliga season record of the legendary “Bomber” Gerd Müller from the 1971/1972 season, which was long thought to be unattainable. In the 2021 calendar year, with a total of 43 goals, he was one goal better than Müller in 1972.

Berger and Neuer come away empty-handed
