America has said that any country that trades with Iran will always be at risk of sanctions.
America has given a warning after the Chabahar Port deal was signed between India and Iran. America has said that India will be in danger of sanctions because of doing business with Iran. In fact, US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel was questioned on the Chabahar Port deal during the press briefing on Monday.
Responding to this, Patel said, “We have received information that Iran and India have signed an agreement related to Chabahar port. India will take its own decisions on foreign policies and its relations with other countries, but whichever country Iran Anyone involved in trade with China will be at risk of being banned.”
US State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel has said that America has received information about the deal between India and Iran.
India got Chabahar Port for 10 years
India on Monday signed a deal to lease Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar, Iran for 10 years. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was sent from India to Iran for this agreement. India and Iran have been working on Chabahar for two decades. Now the entire management of the port will be with India.
Through Chabahar Port, India will get a new route for trade with Afghanistan and Central Asia. This will also eliminate the need for Pakistan. In a way, this port will provide an alternative route for trade to India and Afghanistan.
Under the deal, Indian company India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) will invest $120 million in Chabahar Port. Apart from this investment, financial assistance of $250 million will be provided. This will make this agreement worth around $370 million.
What is Chabahar Port and why is it important for India?
India wants to increase its trade across the world. Chabahar Port can play an important role in this. India can do direct trade with Iran, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia and Europe with the help of this port. Iran and India had signed an agreement to build Chabahar Port in 2018.
Earlier, to send any goods from India to Afghanistan, it had to pass through Pakistan. However, due to the border dispute between the two countries, India was looking for an option other than Pakistan.
Since the development of Chabahar port, this is the best route to send goods to Afghanistan. India is also sending wheat to Afghanistan through this route. Apart from Afghanistan, this port will also open routes for India to Central Asian countries. Gas and oil from these countries can also be brought through this port.
Chabahar is being seen as a strategic port of India compared to Gwadar Port of Pakistan. China is developing Gwadar under the Belt and Road Project. India will also be able to keep an eye on China and Pakistan through this port.
America has imposed sanctions on Iran
According to reports, America has imposed almost all trade sanctions on Iran. The US government has also blocked all Iranian assets in the country. At the same time, America has also stopped the allied countries from helping Iran and selling weapons.
America has imposed these sanctions because of Iran’s nuclear program, violation of human rights and support to terrorist organizations. Along with this, Iran is the country on which America has imposed the most sanctions.
Last month, Iran attacked Israel with missiles and drones, after which America imposed fresh sanctions on it. The US had taken action against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Iranian Defense Ministry and missile and drone production companies associated with the Iranian regime.
During the presidency of Donald Trump, India got concession from America regarding the Chabahar Port deal.
India got exemption in Trump administration
During Donald Trump’s presidency, America had given exemption to India regarding the Chabahar Port deal. The US had said that these activities are important for Afghanistan’s development and ongoing support for humanitarian relief.
This exemption was given to India under the Iran Freedom and Counter-Proliferation Act 2012 (IFCA) for the development of the port and construction of the railway line. After this exemption, many countries including India could ship goods and import Iranian petroleum products through the port.
India kept buying oil from Iran despite tension with America
Earlier in the year 2011 also, America had imposed many economic sanctions on Iran due to its nuclear program. After this, in the year 2012, America had ordered the banks of all the countries of the world to stop the payments made in exchange for Iran’s oil.
However, during this period, 7 countries were given exemption, which included India. Despite the exemption, pressure was put on these seven countries to reduce the purchase of oil from Iran, but India did not do so. According to the data released at that time, India had overtaken China in the matter of purchasing oil from Iran.
What is the meaning of sanctions on India?
Rajan Kumar, an international affairs expert and professor at JNU, says that India has also talked to America regarding this port. After this, America will not impose any sanctions on Iran which will affect this port.
America cannot do anything special on Chabahar Port. Only Russia and Iran can have an impact in this. However, many countries are not able to invest in Iran due to US sanctions.
