World Championship shock one day before the Formula E race weekend in Portland: Title contender Oliver Rowland (Nissan) has to miss the two races on the permanent race track in the US state of Oregon! This means that the dream of winning the first title in the electric world championship has ended prematurely. Before the season’s 13th and 14th races of 16, Rowland is in fourth place in the table.
The Briton is out due to health problems, as the Nissan team announced on Friday afternoon, without giving any precise details. The bad news came at the last minute on the day of the first practice session. It was a bitter blow: Rowland was in the running for the title from the start in his strongest Formula E season to date and has collected 131 points so far. Leader and Jaguar newcomer Nick Cassidy leads the standings with 167 points.
Formula E 2024: The World Championship table
There are still four races to go in Portland and the season finale in London before the new champion is decided. Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche) can also count on good chances as second overall with 142 points. For the German car manufacturer, it would be the first title triumph in the all-electric formula racing series.
Instead of regular driver Rowland, Brazilian Caio Collet will be stepping in for the Nissan factory team. The 22-year-old will be competing in his first Formula E races in Portland, but has been with the Japanese factory team for some time as a test and simulator driver. Collet was at least able to familiarize himself with the electric car on the track during previous test drives.
