The route

Isle of Man TT: Peter Hickman’s record lap in the Onboard (18:15 min.)

The race track for the Tourist Trophy is probably the most spectacular course in the world and also the most traditional motorcycle race track. The TT has been using the Snaefell Mountain Course since 1911, which leads along the coast and through the island’s capital Douglas into the almost uninhabited mountains in the interior of the island.

The 60.725 km long route on normal country roads, through villages and past traffic islands is only closed to traffic for training, qualifying and races. There are no safety measures such as gravel beds; instead, walls and lamp posts are used for the TT. Air fences are also used in some cases.

The races themselves are not conducted as a mass start, but as “time trials”: the riders start individually on their three, four or six laps, and the highest average speed (i.e. fastest overall time over the course) wins. The lap record on the Snaefell Mountain Course is currently an average of 135.452 mph (217.989 km/h) or the equivalent of 16:42.778 minutes. This best time was set by Peter Hickman in the 2018 Senior TT, where he also broke the race record and increased it to 131.700 mph (211.951 km/h) or 1:43:08.065 hours.
