Pat Symonds’ Formula 1 career: what next?
The Briton is said to have informed the FIA of his planned departure some time ago, and internally the members of the world motorsport association were informed about it at the beginning of the week. However, there has not yet been a public announcement. Symonds is currently on gardening leave.
Symonds is a veteran of Formula 1. He entered the biggest motorsport stage with Toleman in the 1980s and remained with the team in the following decades, which was subsequently taken over by Benetton and ultimately became the Renault works team.
As a result of the Crashgate scandal, he left Renault in 2010 and subsequently joined Virgin Racing (later Manor/Marussia) as a consultant before coming on board as Chief Technical Officer at Williams in 2013. He stayed in Grove until 2016, and in 2017 he switched to Formula 1 itself. It is not known what and whether the now 70-year-old will do after the end of the ban period, or whether he will remain in Formula 1 and the motorsport business at all .
