After his heavy crash in the first corner of Assen, Alex Rins will miss the MotoGP weekend at the Sachsenring. On Monday, the Yamaha rider underwent successful surgery on his right ankle and wrist, but is not planning to start again until after the summer break in Silverstone. At the German GP, Yamaha is therefore giving Remy Gardner the chance for a short MotoGP comeback.
Gardner, the 2021 Moto2 champion, rode an unsuccessful year for Tech3-KTM in the top class in 2022 before losing his place to Augusto Fernandez. Since then he has been racing in the Superbike World Championship. “We would like to thank Remy Gardner and the GYTR GRT Yamaha WSBK team for allowing him to join us at the Sachsenring at such short notice,” says Yamaha team director Massimo Meregalli.
Gardner is looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity: “I just want to thank Yamaha for putting their trust in me to ride this weekend. I will use it as a great learning experience.”
Gardner is aware that the short-term jump back to MotoGP on an unknown motorcycle will be a big challenge: “It’s a new motorcycle, but returning to MotoGP for a race is always a great experience. So I’m looking forward to this weekend and am just extremely happy about this opportunity.”
In his regular Superbike job, Gardner is currently seventh in the standings after four weekends. In the second race at Assen, he stood on the podium for the first time in 2024.
