In recent days, rumors have been circulating around the Haas Formula 1 team. Toyota was at the center of them. The Japanese car manufacturer was linked with a return to F1, as a technical partner with the Americans. These rumors have not necessarily been canceled, but have suffered a serious setback.
On Tuesday, Haas officially announced that it will continue to be supplied with Ferrari engines in the new regulatory period, which begins in 2026. There is talk of extending the technical partnership with the Scuderia. In the past, Haas not only sourced the engines from Maranello, but also the gearbox and, associated with this, the rear suspension.
Haas and Ferrari will stay together in Formula 1 until 2028
The new contract between the Maranello-based engine manufacturer and Haas runs until 2028, as the team from Kannapolis in the state of North Carolina confirmed. “I am delighted that we have been able to extend our cooperation with Scuderia Ferrari until 2028,” said team boss Ayao Komatsu when making the announcement.
“The relationship with Scuderia Ferrari has always been special for us – they were instrumental in the development of the program in the early days and have been a valuable technical partner for us over the past nine seasons,” he continued. Haas has maintained a close working relationship with Ferrari since entering Formula 1 in 2016.
In times of sporting success, the US team also had to put up with the accusation that they were something like a B-team of the Scuderia and that the cooperation went too far because of this close cooperation.
Toyota partnership off the table?
The extension with Ferrari does not automatically mean a cancellation of a collaboration between Toyota and Haas, but it does somewhat reduce the significance of these rumors. The Scuderia, which competes with Toyota on the global car market as a Fiat brand and also competes directly against the Japanese in the WEC, would hardly be interested in such a partnership.
However, it is still conceivable that Toyota will take over the production of certain components from Dallara. The Italian racing car brand is currently the main producer of components for the Haas car in Formula 1. It also seems possible that the US team could move to the wind tunnel of the Toyota motorsport department in Cologne. At the moment, Haas also carries out its wind tunnel work exclusively in Maranello.
