Presentation of the new BMW 1 Series

It has already been 20 years since BMW introduced the entry-level model 1 Series (or internally E87). The little Bavarian emerged from the BMW Compact (1994 to 2004), which was part of the 3 Series. We have now reached generation number 4, which will be available from October 2024. Internally, the new model now goes by the abbreviation F70 and, like its predecessors, will roll off the production line at the BMW Group plant in Leipzig.

Visually, the manufacturer’s new, slightly more angular design is implemented in many ways, although the general shape remains similar to its predecessor. As is typical for the brand, there is a long hood with a passenger cell set back. The dimensions have only increased minimally: the length has increased by 42 millimeters to a total of 4.36 meters. The width is 1.80 meters, the height has grown by 25 millimeters to 1.46 meters. The wheelbase measures 2.67 meters. The nose is now lower and has a new, wider BMW kidney grille. LED headlights are standard, and an adaptive matrix headlight system with glare-free high beam and cornering light can also be ordered as an option. The new lighting graphics were adopted from the “New Class” studies. The side view is similar to the third generation of the vehicle and the window line ends in a classic “Hofmeister kink”. The integrated number “1” is new here. The rear looks compact and has a roof edge spoiler, a black insert in the style of a diffuser and new lights. The latter are now split in two, are much more angular and look sportier than the predecessor.

Speaking of sportier: the agility, steering precision and cornering dynamics of the new BMW 1 Series benefit from increased rigidity of the body structure and the chassis connection. The further development of its chassis technology includes, among other things, optimized kinematics, highly preloaded stabilizer bearings and new shock absorber technology. The optionally available M Sport package includes the Adaptive M chassis including a vehicle lowering of up to 8 millimeters, sports steering and, as an optional extra, up to 19-inch light-alloy wheels and an M Sport brake system.

The interior is minimalist

For a long time, BMW pursued a more classic approach in the cockpit. While other German premium manufacturers or Asian carmakers had long offered large display landscapes, the Bavarians still had small built-in screens. With the new launch of the 1 Series, this too now has the “curved display” consisting of a 10.25-inch and a 10.70-inch screen. A head-up function is also available as an option. All around, the interior is extremely minimalist and takes up the design approach of the new 5 Series. The air conditioning control via buttons has been eliminated because it has been incorporated into the infotainment system. The air vents are very narrow and are split in two at the sides. There are hardly any trim strips, instead there are ambient light strips almost everywhere. A few classic buttons are only installed in the center console. This is also where you will find the new toggle switch for gear selection. All surfaces in the new 1 Series are made entirely of leather-free materials. The seats have also been redesigned and are now supposed to be more comfortable on long journeys. Sports seats with a massage function made from recycled PET are available as an option. The vehicle has a total storage capacity of up to 1,200 liters. If the rear seats are not folded down, the trunk can hold 380 liters.

The new 1 Series now offers a significantly expanded selection of systems for automated driving and parking. The standard equipment includes the Driving Assistant including front collision warning, lane departure warning, exit warning and traffic sign recognition, as well as the Parking Assistant including reversing assistant. The steering and lane guidance assistant, the automatic Speed ​​Limit Assist and the route control when using the active cruise control with Stop & Go function are optionally available.

The new engine generation

All engines offered for the new 1 Series come from the group’s latest modular generation. The entry-level model is the 118d with 150 hp and 360 Newton meters of torque. Above that is the 120d as a mild hybrid, also with 150 horsepower and 360 Nm. The third option is the mild hybrid petrol engine 120 (the “i” after it is omitted from now on) with 170 hp and 280 Newton meters of torque. The top model is the M135 xDrive with M TwinPower Turbo technology, 300 hp and 300 Nm. While the other engines take around 7.8 to 8.3 seconds to go from zero to 100 km/h, the M version manages the sprint from a standstill in 4.9 seconds. Incidentally, the power is always transferred to the road via a 7-speed Steptronic transmission with dual clutch. At a later date after the market launch in autumn 2024, BMW will add the 116 (three-cylinder) and the 123 xDrive (four-cylinder) to the engine range.

The new BMW 1 Series will be launched in Germany in the basic 120 version with the smallest engine for 37,900 euros. The top model M135 xDrive costs 56,200 euros.
