Maverick Vinales sets the first MotoGP session best time in Mugello. Pedro Acosta crashes in the final phase of the first free practice session while chasing the fastest lap.

The result: Vinales was 0.188 seconds faster than Fabio Quartararo, who finished second, in 1:46.140 minutes. Third place went to Franco Morbidelli, ahead of Pedro Acosta and Jorge Martin. Marc Marquez was sixth, followed by Aleix Espargaro and Francesco Bagnaia. Alex Rins and Alex Marquez completed the top ten.

Marco Bezzecchi finished 13th, Brad Binder finished 14th and Enea Bastianini finished 18th.

Falls, defects & incidents: Aleix Espargaro braked twice in turn one and had to go into the gravel trap both times, but managed to avoid a crash. Pedro Acosta and Joan Mir followed suit, each going off the track once. A mistake in turn one ended less happily for Alex Rins. It caused the first crash of the MotoGP weekend.

On his way to a new best time in the last minutes of training, Pedro Acosta also crashed in Turn 10. He slid over the front wheel of his GasGas machine.

The weather: After heavy rain on Thursday and overnight into Friday, there were still a few wet patches on the track during the first MotoGP free practice session, but the racing line was already completely dry. A few dark clouds were visible over Mugello, but there was no further rain during the session. The outside temperature was 19 degrees, and 27 degrees was measured on the asphalt.
