Germany has again a Moto2 rider – at least for the next two Grands Prix. Marcel Schrötter will make a temporary comeback at the race weekends in Assen (28-30 June) and at the Sachsenring (5-7 July). He will replace the injured Deniz Öncü in the Red Bull KTM Ajo team. The racing team of team boss Aki Ajo announced this on Thursday morning.

Öncü was injured in a training crash in Turkey at the beginning of June. The subsequent examinations revealed numerous fractures of the radius and scaphoid bone in his left arm. On June 10, Öncü was finally operated on by Dr. Özcan Kocanli in Antalya. A date for his return has not yet been set. However, after the double-header in Assen and at the Sachsenring, the motorcycle world championship will take a three-week summer break, which will give Öncü time for rehabilitation.

Marcel Schrötter swaps Supersport for Moto2

Öncü’s pain is Schrötter’s joy. The 31-year-old will take part in a Moto2 race weekend for the first time since Valencia 2022. He then switched to the Supersport World Championship. There, Schrötter has made it onto the podium eleven times in 34 races on the MV Agusta F3 800 RR, but has not yet managed a win. He finished the 2023 season in third place overall and is currently fourth in the World Championship.

Conveniently, the Supersport World Championship, which was held in Misano last weekend, now has no races until the event in Donington from July 12th to 14th. This means that Schrötter can take on the substitute role without affecting his work as a regular driver.

Schrötter was a fixture in the motorcycle world championship from 2010 to 2022, and from 2012 he drove in Moto2. In a total of 227 world championship starts, he made it onto the podium five times and took three pole positions.
