Stefan Bradl was in the spotlight during the MotoGP qualifying for his home race at the Sachsenring – but unintentionally. He was driving slowly on the track in the last seconds of Q1 and was trying to cross the racing line between turns one and two in order to position himself off it. At that moment, however, Marc Marquez came up from behind, had to avoid Bradl and then abort his lap.

Bradl destroys Marc Marquez’s Q2 chance

Marquez’s anger towards Bradl was clearly visible, the MotoGP superstar made angry gestures at the German local hero. Understandable, because for Marquez a lot was at stake on this lap. With an improvement, he could have made it into Q2 and thus fought for one of the front starting positions.

But nothing came of it and Marc Marquez had to start the sprint and Grand Prix at the Sachsenring from 13th place. The scene between Marquez and Bradl was immediately investigated by the stewards. They quickly came to a conclusion: just half an hour after the incident, they handed down a penalty for Bradl. He will be moved back three starting positions in Sunday’s race.

Stefan Bradl has to go to the end of the field

This doesn’t make much difference to the Honda wildcard rider. He only qualified in 21st place anyway and so on Sunday he only has to let Yamaha substitute Remy Gardner pass him, putting him in 22nd place.

Marc Marquez, whom Bradl immediately apologized to after Q1, now also has a tough job ahead of him from 13th place on the grid. Also because he is struggling with a broken left index finger and painful bruises in his chest after a serious fall on Friday.
