Pole position for Moto3 in Barcelona goes to Ivan Ortola. The MT Helmets rider is there at the right time and sets a new best time in the final phase that no other rider can beat. Collin Veijer and pole favourite David Alonso are denied their chance by yellow flags. The Swiss Noah Dettwiler reaches 24th place on the grid.
This is how the Moto3 qualifying went:
It all started with Q1 and the allocation of the last four places for Q2. Matteo Bertelle was the fastest Moto3 rider, finishing 0.107 seconds ahead of David Munoz in 1:47.766 minutes. Luca Lunetta and Jacob Roulstone took third and fourth place. These four riders moved into Q2, while Scott Ogden, Filippo Farioli and Tatsuki Suzuki narrowly missed out on progressing. The Swiss Noah Dettwiler did not manage to get past 10th place in Q1 and will start the Catalonia Grand Prix from P24.
In the subsequent battle for pole position, Daniel Holgado finished the first battle of Q2 at the top of the rankings. Ryusei Yamanaka and Angel Piqueras were second and third behind him. However, this order did not remain the same for long: Dutchman Collin Veijer then moved up to first place, Lunetta climbed to third place and Ivan Ortola to fifth.
Pole favorite David Alonso still had no lap time at this point because he had violated the track limits on the first attempt. The second attempt went better, but the Colombian lost a lot of time behind Ortola. As a result, he ‘only’ finished second behind Veijer, who was able to set another best time a few moments later.
With just under five minutes to go, the Moto3 riders came in for another pit stop and got some fresh rubber. Due to the length of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, however, they only had one last timed attack on pole position. Ortola used this to set a new best time of 1:46.749 minutes. Veijer and Alonso were also on fast laps, but were unable to pull through due to falls by Holgado and Riccardo Rossi.
Pole position in the Moto3 qualifying in Barcelona goes to Ortola, Veijer and Jose Antonio Rueda complete the first row. Pole favorite Alonso can’t get past sixth place behind Taiyo Furusato and Yamanaka. World Championship leader Holgado is only in ninth place behind Munoz and Adrian Fernandez.
Falls and incidents:
Filippo Farioli caused the first crash of qualifying in the final phase of Q1, falling to the ground in the second sector. Just moments later, Scott Ogden also crashed in turn ten.
In the final seconds of Q2, Daniel Holgado and Riccardo Rossi crashed.
