The time has come: This weekend, July 20/21, 2024 (live on ServusTV On from 6:00 p.m. each day), it will be decided who will be crowned the 2024 Formula E World Champion. A total of seven drivers still have a mathematical chance of winning the title of the tenth season of the Electric World Championship before the last two races of the season in London. Motorsport-Magazin.com provides the most important information before the end of the season.
Formula E: Who will be the drivers’ world champion in 2024?
With regard to the drivers’ world championship, there has been a surprising increase in tension in the final stretch of the season. Jaguar works driver Nick Cassidy still leads the rankings with 167 points, but the New Zealander’s lead has shrunk to twelve points after a scoreless double-header in Portland. There are still 58 points up for grabs this weekend.
Porsche or Jaguar: Who will win the long-awaited title?
But Jaguar is not the only one waiting for a title in Formula E. Porsche has also been chasing the championship triumph in vain since entering Formula E in 2019. Another factor unites both factory teams: last year, both were duped in the battle for the World Championship by their customer teams Andretti (Porsche – Jake Dennis became drivers’ world champion) and Envision (Jaguar – team world champion). With the same number of points as Evans, Porsche factory driver Pascal Wehrlein in third place in the drivers’ world championship still has the chance to end the Porsche factory team’s titlelessness on his own and become the first German driver to win the Formula E title.
On paper, the characteristics of the Formula E races in London speak in Wehrlein’s favor. Unlike in Portland, Shanghai and Berlin recently, no so-called energy-saving battle is expected in the British capital. Instead, the ExCeL London Circuit is notoriously difficult to overtake. Since the circuit’s debut in 2021, only one of six races has been won by drivers outside the top three. Qualifying will therefore play a much more important role compared to previous weekends – and with an average starting position of 5.57, Wehrlein is still the best qualifier of the season.
Will Antonio Felix da Costa crown his crazy winning streak with the title?
But recently Wehrlein’s impeccable qualifying record has crumbled. In the last three qualifying sessions, the Sigmaringen native only managed to make it into the duels once, which he had previously missed only once in eleven qualifying sessions. In addition, Wehrlein had to admit defeat each time to his teammate Antonio Felix da Costa – whom he had previously beaten in all eleven qualifying sessions in 2024.
Speaking of Felix da Costa: The Portuguese is currently riding a wave of success rarely seen in Formula E. After a catastrophic start to the season, the 2020 Formula E champion recently won four of the last five races, including the last three in a row – never before has a driver won more Formula E races in a row. Felix da Costa thus reduced the gap to Cassidy to 33 points. In view of this, the lost 25 points for the revoked Misano victory seem particularly bitter. In addition to the strong racing performance, Felix da Costa also got the temporary qualifying weakness under control and recently qualified in the top 6 four times in a row.
Formula E: An overview of the title contenders
Pos. | driver | team | Points |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Nick Cassidy | jaguar | 167 |
2 | Mitch Evans | jaguar | 155 |
3 | Pascal Wehrlein | Porsche | 155 |
4 | Antonio Felix da Costa | Porsche | 134 |
5 | Oliver Rowland | Nissan | 131 |
6 | Jean-Eric Vergne | DS Penske | 129 |
7 | Jake Dennis | Andretti-Porsche | 122 |
Before the all-important final weekend, Felix da Costa was nevertheless cautious about his own title ambitions. “The title decisions will be made in London. It’s not primarily about me,” Felix da Costa was quoted as saying in a Porsche press release. “Pascal has a good chance of becoming drivers’ world champion and I will do everything I can to support him as best as possible.”
Just three points behind Felix da Costa in the drivers’ championship is Nissan factory driver Oliver Rowland with 131 points, who is returning to the cockpit for his home race in Portland after a health-related break. DS Penske driver Jean-Eric Vergne (129 points) and reigning world champion Jake Dennis (122 points) also have mathematical chances of winning the championship, but given their recent results and the considerable gap, they probably have no chance.
Jaguar and Porsche: Will both triumph in the end?
The drivers’ title will probably not pass the Jaguar and Porsche drivers by. Regardless of this, it is already certain that one of the two factory teams will end the title drought. In the team world championship, mathematically only Jaguar and Porsche are still in the race. Jaguar is also in the lead in this with a 33-point advantage.
Formula E: Team table after 14/16 season races
Pos. | team | Points |
---|---|---|
1 | jaguar | 322 |
2 | Porsche | 289 |
3 | DS Penske | 184 |
4 | Andretti-Porsche | 168 |
5 | Nissan | 157 |
The title in the new manufacturers’ trophy, which was introduced during the current season and will officially be given the status of a world championship from season 11 (2024/25), will also be fought out between Jaguar and Porsche. In this ranking, however, the Zuffenhausen-based company leads with 407 points and a cushion of 19 points.
Can Abt-Cupra and Nico Müller surprise again at their farewell performance?
Away from the hustle and bustle of the World Championship, numerous other teams, including the German Abt Cupra team, are looking for a positive end to the season – especially for Abt, as this will be Nico Müller’s last race for the Kempten-based team for the time being. Can Müller and Abt pull off a surprise like they did in Portland recently, when the Swiss managed to push his inferior customer Mahindra into fifth and sixth place?
After all, there are still important points at stake in the world championship. Before the last race weekend, Abt-Cupra is in ninth place with 38 points – even ahead of the Mahindra factory team. But the latter is still lurking behind with 25 points, as is ERT (23 points). For Abt, the London ePrix will be the last race with Mahindra power. In 2024/25, the team around Thomas Biermaier will become the racing team for newcomer Lola-Yamaha.
Formula E London 2024: This is the track
Formula E will be taking place in London for the fourth time in 2024 – and after a slight change to the route last year, everything will remain the same this season. The 2.080-kilometer-long course will remain in people’s memories above all because it is the only Formula E track to have both an outdoor and an indoor area. The latter runs through the ‘ExCeL’ conference center in the Docklands in East London.
The transition between outdoor and indoor takes place via ramps. In addition, strong bumps in the road sometimes cause jumps. Overtaking is generally considered difficult on the narrow track, especially since energy management plays only a minor role in London. The best overtaking opportunities are probably in turn 1 and in the chicanes in the outdoor area.
