Last year, things were a little different. At that time, there were officially six compounds available, as Pirelli wanted to keep an alternative for the new C1 tire open. But the new development delivered and the C0 was not used on a single race weekend. That’s why it will no longer be available in 2024.
Formula 1 2024: No new tires
The tire compounds are identical to those of the previous year. In the 2023 Formula 1 season, Pirelli spent a long time developing tires that do not require heating blankets. But at the end of July, a planned ban on tire warmers was overturned. Therefore, the product remained unchanged.
According to the regulations, Pirelli’s choice of tires must be decided at least two weeks before the Grand Prix. However, the Italians usually announce their choice much earlier, often months before the race in question. In 2024, only the tires for the first three Grands Prix have been announced so far. Motorsport-Magazin.com provides an overview of the tire sets mentioned so far. C1 corresponds to the hardest compound, C5 to the softest.

Formula 1 Calendar 2024 – Races, Start Times, Tracks
Pirelli’s latest tire selections for the Spanish, Austrian and British Grands Prix are completely without surprises. Barcelona and Silverstone are well known as tracks that put extreme stress on the tires and have always been the domain of the hardest range from C1 to C3. At the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg a few years ago, the switch to the softest range from C3 to C5 proved successful. This will be delivered again in 2024.
Formula 1: These are the tire rules
On a normal race weekend, each driver is provided with 13 sets of dry tires. This contingent consists of two sets of hard tires, three sets of medium and eight sets of the softest compound. In addition, there are five sets of intermediate tires and two sets of rain tires.
There are two exceptions: on sprint weekends, the drivers only receive twelve sets of tires. The difference is one less set of soft tires, while the quota of hard and medium tires remains the same. In addition, Pirelli can also bring an additional set of tires for testing purposes on two weekends per season, which the teams can use in training. On these weekends, there is also one less set of soft tires.
