Once again, Moto3 cannot get past one name in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello. David Alonso secures pole position ahead of Ivan Ortola and Jose Antonio Rueda. Only Ortola, who sat in Alonso’s slipstream, can keep up with the pace of the Aspar driver. Rueda is already more than half a second behind in third place.
Collin Veijer, Dani Holgado and Luca Lunetta form the second row ahead of Jacob Roulstone, Taiyo Furusato and Joel Kelso. Riccardo Rossi completes the top 10 for the CIP Green Power team. Teammate Noah Dettwiler did not find his way in qualifying in Tuscany and finished Q1 in last place. He will therefore start the race from 26th place.
This is how the Moto3 qualifying in Mugello went:
The following 12 drivers competed in the first qualifying: Buasri, Farioli, Carraro, Bertelle, Ogden, Almansa, Piqueras, Dettwiler, Munoz, Kelso, Whatley and Esteban.
After the first lap, Nicola Carraro set the best time ahead of Scott Ogden, Joel Esteban and Angel Piqueras. Afterwards, all drivers returned to the pits to have fresh tires fitted.
Two minutes before the end of the sessions, the drivers of the BOE Motorsports team took the lead. Joel Kelso and David Munoz each drove a time of 56, putting more than half a second between themselves and their competitors.
Scott Ogden beats Joel Kelso’s best time and finishes Q1 as the fastest. Filippo Farioli secures the last Q2 ticket. Joel Esteban and Angel Piqueras narrowly miss out. Noah Dettwiler finishes the session in twelfth place.
The second qualifying session starts with Ivan Ortola setting the best time ahead of Alonso and Rueda. Furusato, Nepa and Holgado are in fourth to sixth positions.
Collin Veijer is now the first in Q2 to set a time of 54 and takes over the interim lead from Ortola.
With three minutes to go, Ortola and Alonso shoot to the top of the timesheets. Ortola has found the best slipstream in the field and is sticking to Alonso’s tail. This puts the MT Helmets driver more than three tenths between himself and his competitors.
David Alonso narrowed the gap a little in the following lap to 0.2 seconds.
David Alonso is unbeatable! With his last fast lap he sets a time of 1:54.194 minutes and secures pole position in Mugello! Ivan Ortola and Jose Antonio Rueda start from the front row with the Spaniard. Collin Veijer, Daniel Holgado and Luca Lunetta are on the second row. Taiyo Furusato, Joel Kelso and Riccardo Rossi complete the top 10.
Falls and incidents:
Collin Veijer crashed over his front wheel in turn 10 in the second qualifying session. Fortunately, the Dutchman was uninjured.
