Aston Martin is adding the next piece of the puzzle in the 2025 Formula 1 driver market. Lance Stroll will remain Fernando Alonso’s teammate in the Silverstone team until at least 2026. The Canadian’s contract extension was officially announced on Thursday before the Austrian GP. There is talk that he will remain part of the team in 2025 and beyond. So until at least 2026.
It is not a surprise, however. Stroll is the son of team owner Lawrence Stroll, so anything other than an extension would have been a sensation anyway. However, it is not a given that this will be communicated in an official statement. In the past, this has not always been the case with Stroll’s contract extensions. It is the second driver extension of the day, after Pierre Gasly’s contract with Alpine was officially extended shortly before.
Lance Stroll stays at Aston Martin: Formula 1 contract extended
“I am delighted to have committed to staying with the team until 2025 and beyond. It is amazing to see how far we have come in the last five years. We have grown so much as a team and there is still so much to look forward to,” Stroll was quoted as saying when his contract was extended. The extension means that Stroll and Alonso will also form the driver pairing at Aston Martin in 2026, as soon as the team is registered as the official works team of engine partner Honda is starting.
Team boss Mike Krack said of Stroll’s extension: “We are delighted to confirm Lance’s future at Aston Martin. He has played a key role in building this team. His technical feedback, together with his dedicated work in the simulator, has helped to develop the car every season.”
“The consistency and stability with which Lance and Fernando remain in our team is a great platform to continue to realise our ambitions. We look forward to creating more incredible memories and achieving further success together,” continued the Luxembourger.
Stroll is currently in his sixth season with the Silverstone-based Formula 1 team. He made his debut with Williams in 2017 before his father bought the former Force India team with a Canadian consortium in 2018. The highlight of his time with the racing team, which has been racing as Aston Martin since 2021, was a pole position at the 2020 Turkish GP, as well as two podiums in the same season.
