Alex Rins: Highsider with cold tires
The crash occurred on Sunday in the first corner directly after the start. Rins had started the race from position 15 and was on the outside lane in turn 1. When the 18-time Grand Prix winner stepped on the gas, his Yamaha YZF-M1 threw him off with a highside. The reason was obviously the cold rear tire. It had lost grip when leaning and regained it just a fraction of a second later. Rins therefore had no chance of stopping the fall.
Alex Rins: Broken bones in wrist and foot
The impact was extremely hard and Rins was then taken to the medical center for further examinations. Just a few hours later, Yamaha issued a press release saying that the 28-year-old was already on his way to Madrid to “assess the severity of the injuries to his right wrist and right foot.”
Several (some small) fractures had already been discovered in the medical centre on the track. “I hope to have news soon,” Rins was quoted as saying. A failure would of course come at a very unfortunate time, as the ninth stop of the season in Germany is just around the corner next weekend.
Alex Rins: Sachsenring participation questionable
It is uncertain whether Rins will be able to take part in the MotoGP event at the Sachsenring. Team manager Massimo Meregalli gave the all-clear. “We are lucky that the injury is not more serious. But he will probably still need surgery.” If Rins is unable to compete, Yamaha does not have to nominate a replacement rider, as the injury occurred only seven days ago.
After the German Grand Prix, MotoGP will go into the summer break. All riders will have three weeks off from racing to recover. In addition to Rins, Aleix Espargaro and Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori also sustained injuries at the weekend in Assen. The second half of the season will then start in Silverstone at the beginning of August.
