Espargaro remained lying in the gravel bed and eventually had to be carried away on a stretcher. He was taken to the medical center on the track, where the all-clear was finally given. The doctors found no broken bones, and Espargaro escaped with bruises in the area of his coccyx.
His media appointments on Friday evening were cancelled, but Aprilia provided some written words from its fallen rider. “It’s a shame that I had the crash because the day had actually gone very well up until then,” Espargaro explains. “I’m happy, although I have a lot of pain in my lower back and neck. On Saturday it will certainly be worse, but it’s not as dramatic as it could have been.”
Aleix Espargaro directly into Q2 despite crash
Aleix Espargaro, who is considered a specialist for the TT Circuit of Assen, easily made it straight into Q2 despite his fall. He finished the training in fourth place, 0.472 seconds behind Francesco Bagnaia’s best time.
This means that the ailing Aprilia star will at least be spared the always extremely stressful 15-minute Q1 on Saturday. With the second free practice session, Q2 and the sprint at 3 p.m., an intense Saturday awaits Espargaro.
