The 24 Hours of Le Mans (June 12-16, 2024) is the endurance race of superlatives: 62 cars from the three classes Hypercar, LMP2 and the new LMGT3 make up the starting field for the 92nd edition of the classic. In the top category called Hypercar, 23 LMH hypercars and LMDh cars will meet in the battle for overall victory – four participants more than in the regular WEC season.
Nine manufacturers will compete in the Hypercar class: The German LMDh brands BMW and Porsche will face Ferrari, Toyota, Peugeot and Isotta Fraschini (all with LMH hypercars) as well as Alpine, Lamborghini and Cadillac (all with LMDh cars). An additional Porsche 963, a Lamborghini SC63 and two Cadillac V-Series.Rs from the IMSA series will join the starting field especially for Le Mans.
Six Porsches start in Le Mans – Mick Schumacher to make his debut
Porsche is the most strongly represented with six prototypes from the works team Penske Motorsport (3) and the two customer teams Jota (2) and Proton Competition (1). Cadillac and Ferrari with the two AF Corse works cars and the private 499 P from AF Corse each field three cars. BMW, Toyota, Peugeot, Lamborghini and Alpine are each represented with two cars. The small manufacturer Isotta Fraschini is fielding a single LMH hypercar.
The starting field is made up of the crème de la crème of motorsport: former Formula 1 drivers such as WEC debutant Mick Schumacher, Jenson Button, Robert Kubica, Romain Grosjean and Felipe Nasr will meet multiple Le Mans winners such as Andre Lotterer, Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber. They will also be joined by DTM champions such as Rene Rast, Marco Wittmann and Sheldon van der Linde.
Le Mans participant: Valentino Rossi in LMGT3 class at the start
Speaking of big names: Valentino Rossi, one of the most famous racing drivers in the world, will be taking part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The nine-time motorcycle world champion is about to make his debut at the endurance classic and is fighting for victory in the LMGT3 class. Rossi will share the #46 BMW M4 GT3 from WRT with BMW works driver Maxime Martin and bronze driver Ahmad Al-Harthy. In the GT3 category, the regulations stipulate that one bronze, one silver and one platinum driver must share the cockpit.
This year, 23 GT3 cars will take over from the GTE class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Everything a racer’s heart could desire is there: Porsche with the top team Manthey, the new Ford Mustang, plus Corvette, Aston Martin, McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Lexus. Well-known GT3 drivers include Christopher Mies, Kelvin van der Linde, Klaus Bachler and Daniel Juncadella.
Which classes still race in Le Mans?
The LMP2 class is actually out of the WEC, but is returning for a one-off appearance at Le Mans. 16 of these prototypes have received an invitation from the ACO or qualified through other classifications such as the Asian Le Mans Series. Proton Competition is a German team that is taking on heavyweights such as United Autosports, AF Corse, Algarve Pro Racing and Inter Europol.
With Jonas Ried, Laurents Hörr and Alexander Matschull from Germany as well as the Austrian Rene Binder, four German-speaking drivers are represented in the LMP2 field.
