New Delhi. On 12th August 1997, Mumbai’s Jeet Nagar reverberated with the sound of gunfire and within minutes, the news came that T-Series owner Gulshan Kumar was shot dead in front of a temple. It has been 27 years since this incident, but till date Bollywood has not been able to forget this painful incident. Recently, Manoj Bajpayee recalled the ‘disappointing’ time when his producer ran away leaving the shooting of his film ‘Satya’ midway after Gulshan Kumar’s murder.
Manoj Bajpayee is known for speaking his mind. These days he is in the news for his 100th film ‘Bhaiya Ji’. Manoj Bajpayee has played different characters in films, but whenever it comes to his films, ‘Satya’ is definitely remembered. Recently he told how the original producer of the film ‘Satya’ was very scared after the murder of Gulshan Kumar. In such a situation, he withdrew his hands. This project was left hanging in the middle.
When RGV found another producer within a week
Recently, in an interview with Sushant Sinha on YouTube, he recalled the events of about 27 years ago. He told that in 1997, the murder of music producer, bhajan singer and businessman Gulshan Kumar had put a halt to the shoot of ‘Satya’. The actor said that that one week was very difficult for the film crew. The project was left hanging in the middle. But director Ram Gopal Varma was not ready to give up. In such a situation, he found another producer within a week.
‘Satya’ was released in 1998.
I got 1.5 lakh for ‘Satya’
Manoj Bajpayee also told how he had to face difficulties after shifting to Mumbai. The actor said that he had received Rs 1.5 lakh for the film ‘Satya’. He thought it was a good deal because it was a big opportunity for him. But when his luck was turning, Gulshan Kumar was shot dead. The underworld was said to be behind this.
‘Satya’ was my only hope
Manoj revealed that he gave his all to ‘Satya’ and it was his only hope. He told that after about a week, Ram Gopal Varma got Bharat Shah and then the filming resumed. We gave our all to Satya. That one week was very tough for all of us. None of us knew what to do. ‘Satya’ was our only hope. That uncertainty was very frustrating. Manoj Bajpayee further told that I had decided that until Ram Gopal Varma says that it is over, I will not lose hope. But, he never gave up, he would only say that we are stopping temporarily. After eight days we got the good news.
After the murder, these questions came to Ram Gopal Varma’s mind and ‘Satya’ was prepared
The murder of Gulshan Kumar eventually shaped the core essence of Satya. Ram Gopal Varma also mentions this in his autobiography ‘Guns and Thighs’. RGV has described his thoughts on learning about this murder. He has written- If Gulshan Kumar woke up at 7 am, what time would the killer have woken up? Did he ask his mother to wake him up, because he had to do some shooting? Did the shooters have breakfast before the shootout or after?… Then I suddenly got the idea that you always hear about gangsters only when they either kill or die. But what do they do in between? This was the thought, which eventually resulted in ‘Satya’. ‘Satya’ is still considered one of the most influential films in Hindi cinema history, which has launched the careers of many stars.
