Memories emerge from ‘Gullak’, stories of ordinary families in the past…

Well, what can be said about the web series Gullak that what to write about it. It is a series of fun and laughter, but it deserves to be written about. The reason for this is that this series succeeds in bringing a smile on the face of the audience. A smile appears on the corner of the lips of any serious person in no time. However, the entire Gullak series is the story of the memories of that generation, which just keeps running in the daily chores.

People born after 1990 and 2000 would have seen that world only when they lived in small towns or cities. The generation studying in English schools living in flats would not have seen all this. This is the piggy bank of memories of the generation before them. The generation that is passing the time with fingers on mobile games may not know that the neighbor had the authority to enter the house next to him at any time.

Santosh Mishra – jameel khan
Shanti Mishra- Geetanjali Kulkarni
Annu- Vaibhav Raj Gupta
Peace- Joy
Writer- Vidit Tripathi

There was no need for him to knock on the door. The time shown in the story without mentioning the year was like this. The neighbour remained a part of the neighbour’s house with complete jealousy. There was neither happiness nor sadness without him. The decoration of the neighbour’s house was appreciated but there was a burning feeling of jealousy in the heart.

Sons always had news of the neighbourhood to tell their parents. More than all the messages like Good Morning, Good Night and Happy Sunday that came in WhatsApp groups. The reaction of parents to these messages determined the character and values of the children. For this, neither any separate lesson was taught in school nor did the parents have to teach anything separately. This was decided by the decisions of the parents in everyday life. What should be done and what should not be done.

Fourth season I would have liked to see Annu enter the threshold of youth from his teen age. However, it would have been more fun if Annu’s acting had been a little better. Still, a lot is revealed in his desire to quickly jump to the age of his elder brother. The commentary has also left its mark in these episodes of the web series. However, commentary is rarely used in films or audio-visual medium.

In plays, there is a provision of a sutradhar, but it is believed that the filmmaker will bring out the whole thing through his scenes and dialogues. So in this commentary, a good effort has been made to show the condition of the middle class that has been mentioned repeatedly through Annu. To meet his pocket expenses, he even thinks of taking money from the piggy bank and then stealing money from the cupboard. The filmmaker has been successful in showing his innocence as well. As an example, when there is talk of liberation of ancestors from hell through Nirjala Ekadashi, Annu immediately asks – “So were our ancestors in hell till now?”

The growing younger son finally manages to earn commission from a junk dealer. Selling junk proves to be a valuable coin in the piggy bank. It is very difficult for ordinary households to remove junk from the house. And if it is a family like Mishra’s, it is even more difficult. Anyway, the elder son has become responsible. The problems he has to face while shouldering the responsibility are very common in today’s times. But the cunning Kanpuriya finds a way around it and it is quite fun to watch.

The story progresses and the older generation i.e. Santosh Mishra gets hold of the love letter written by Annu. It is also interesting to know why he wrote the love letter. Anyway, getting a love letter from a son is considered a very serious crime in such a family. The father of the accused gets involved in this. Annu running away from home and then the elder brother catching him and bringing him back is a hit with the audience. Many of these things have been lost with time.

The excuse may be the expansion of cities, flat culture or the mobile phone entering the soul along with the body, but the truth is that life was like this till two-three decades ago. Even after the advent of TV. Yes, when TV started, many such serials used to come on Doordarshan which could be watched with the whole family. Gullak is also one such series. However, its initial episodes definitely seem light.
