Kangana’s film is based on the emergency imposed during the tenure of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Punjab’s independent MP Sarbjit Singh Khalsa has criticized the film.

Faridkot MP Sarbjit Singh Khalsa said, “There are reports of Sikhs being portrayed in a wrong way in the new film ‘Emergency’, which can lead to deterioration of peace and law and order situation in the society. If Sikhs have been shown as separatists or terrorists in this film, then it is a deep conspiracy. This film is a psychological attack, which the government should pay attention to beforehand and stop inciting hatred against Sikhs in other countries.”
