Why was Cannes established?
- The objective of the Cannes Film Festival was to promote different types of films and cinematography.
- In 1939, there was only one Venice Film Festival in the world. In this, Italy’s dictator Mussolini and Germany’s dictator Adolf Hitler used to give awards to films after consulting each other.
- Things like acting, making and art were not taken care of in the film. Against this arbitrariness, ‘Cannes Film Festival’ was started in 1939 in Cannes city of France.
The first Cannes Film Festival, which began in September 1939, had to be stopped on the very next day.
First event postponed due to Second World War
- The Cannes Film Festival was announced in June 1939. It was reported in Paris that it would be held from 1 to 20 September.
- Cannes, near Nice city of France, is the city of beaches, where this festival takes place.
- Movies were selected for the festival. By the end of August, stars also started arriving here. Screening of films also started on the morning of 1 September.
- Then the news came that Hitler had attacked Poland and due to this war the Cannes Film Festival had to be stopped on the very first day.
- Two days later, France and Britain declared war against Germany. This was the beginning of the Second World War. The war lasted for about 6 years.
After this, the Cannes Film Festival took place in 1946 in which a total of 22 films were premiered.
The festival finally started in 1946
- After the war ended, in 1946, the French provincial government approved the creation of the Cannes Film Festival to attract tourists to the French Riviera.
- After this, this festival started on 20 September 1946. Representatives from 18 countries became part of this festival.
- After this, in 1948 and 1950 the festival was canceled due to financial issues. However, this festival has been happening continuously since 1952.
