Aishwarya’s dress was changed for the climax of ‘Devdas’, cloth was taken at midnight, 15 meter long saree was ready in 6 hours

Recently, costume designer Neeta Lulla shared the story behind ‘Paro’s’ iconic red and white saree and how she created the dress at the last minute.

Many stars including Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit and Shahrukh Khan decorated this film with their acting. Recently, costume designer Neeta Lulla revealed how Sanjay Leela Bhansali had changed the dress of ‘Paro’ at the last minute for a scene in the film.

When the director demanded for the scene of fire in pallu
During an interview on YouTube channel Wiping Out the Norm, Neeta told how Sanjay had changed the saree at the last minute for the last shot of Devdas. The evening before the shoot, Sanjay had asked Neeta to arrange for a 15 meter long silk saree. Sharing the incident, Neeta said, ‘I have imagined her (Aishwarya) running down the stairs and the pallu of her saree is burning. I need a 15 meter long silk saree for this. I want two such sarees, so that if one burns, we have the other.

When the director asked- Can we shoot tomorrow?
Neeta told that we did not have mobile phones at that time. She called Aishwarya and Kirron Kher to ask if they had two similar sarees? Neeta said that but I had understood that both of them did not have it. By then it was 10.30. Sanjay asked me if we could shoot the next day. I said- Yes and then left the studio.

The saree was ready in 6 hours
Neeta revealed that after a lot of convincing, a cloth vendor agreed to open his shop at midnight to get the material for the saree. She said, ‘He came to open the shop at 12-12:30. Because I had already spoken to my team, they immediately started embroidery work on the border of the saree. We finished working on the saree at 6 am. I reached the set at 9.30 and we started shooting.’

Let us tell you that ‘Devdas’ was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s third film. The audience loved it a lot and it proved to be a blockbuster hit. It was shown in the Out of Competition section of the Cannes Film Festival 2002. It was also the most expensive Indian film to be made at that time.
