After 9 of 24 races of the 2024 Formula 1 season, Logan Sargeant is in 21st place in the drivers’ world championship with 0 points. His career in the premier class seems to be over after just two seasons, with big names like Kimi Antonelli, Mick Schumacher and Carlos Sainz set to replace him. Equipped with new parts on the FW46, Sargeant now wants to defend his cockpit. He is supported by (still) teammate Alex Albon.
Logan Sargeant: Lack of updates explains lack of F1 performance
“If anything, you only concentrate on yourself,” says Logan Sargeant, trying not to let it get him down despite his uncertain Formula 1 future. Williams has recently made no secret of its interest in Carlos Sainz. “I’m trying to keep motivating myself and perform well.” As in Canada, the goal in Spain is to be on the same level as Alex Albon.
Helpful for his venture: For the first time, both Williams drivers have the same car. Until now, the team from Grove (There were not enough parts for both drivers (apart from the chassis farce). Sargeant had to drive in Monaco with a high-downforce rear wing from last year. He now wants to save his place in Formula 1 with the lighter FW46.
“There have been many moments this year where I’ve done a good job, but you haven’t really seen it. But that’s the point. When the results aren’t there, it doesn’t look good,” the American says, blaming his performance (partly) on the lack of updates.
Alex Albon has so far been given priority for new parts, but it is precisely these thousandths that often make the difference. “It was about making the cars equal again and then seeing where we stand,” emphasises Logan Sargeant.
Now that the super license can be awarded to 17-year-olds in exceptional cases, rumors have repeatedly surfaced that Kimi Antonelli could take his place (possibly during this season). “That is definitely just a rumor,” Sargeant vehemently denies. “People know how to push the media!”
That doesn’t mean that the man from Florida isn’t already looking for alternatives in Formula 1. “It’s worth looking at all the possibilities. In my current position, there’s no reason not to do that,” said the 23-year-old. “You never know which doors will open or remain open.”
Alex Albon would leave the door in the Williams hospitality area open for his teammate. “He did a great job in the last few races. But because we don’t drive the same car, that wasn’t really understood,” he says, breaking a lance for Logan Sargeant. Basically, Albon doesn’t care who drives alongside him in 2025. There is no bad blood with Carlos Sainz even after the Canada debacle.
Sainz rather than Antonelli? Alex Albon wants an experienced teammate
The Thai-Brit does have one wish: “We are [hier bei Williams] on a long journey and need feedback. When I think back, I brought a lot of experience from Red Bull to Williams that I was able to contribute.” Albon spoke openly with James Vowles about the team-mate issue.
“It’s not really my decision, but it would be important for us,” stresses Alex Albon. “Especially if we want to fight in the midfield later in the season or in the next few years.” Naturally, he didn’t want to name any specific names.
