Next setback for Yamaha’s MotoGP project. The first of three wildcards that had already been planned for the Japanese was actually planned for the Italian GP in Mugello, but that is not happening now.

Test pilot Cal Crutchlow will not be ready for action in Mugello for just under two weeks. The Briton has suffered from pain in his right hand so far this season and therefore had to undergo surgery. However, there were complications that made it impossible to start in Mugello. Yamaha therefore has to withdraw the wildcard; a replacement for Crutchlow was not considered.

Despite 6 possible wildcards: Yamaha without a third MotoGP pilot for half a year

This means that Yamaha will only be at the start in Mugello with the two factory drivers Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins. Thanks to the new MotoGP concessions, all manufacturers except Ducati would actually be entitled to up to six wildcards per year.

The other plants have already taken advantage of this opportunity. Aprilia, KTM and Honda drove wildcards with their test riders in Jerez. Pol Espargaro for KTM and Stefan Bradl for Honda have already been confirmed for Mugello. In addition to Mugello, Yamaha had also announced Crutchlow’s appearances at Silverstone and Misano. Since his home race doesn’t take place until the beginning of August, he should be able to get fit again by then. This would mean that Yamaha would not have taken advantage of the chance of a wildcard for half a year.

Before Mugello, however, we first go to Barcelona. Here you can find all information about the broadcasts of the Catalonia GP of MotoGP.
