In spring it is time to change tires, at the earliest when the outside temperature is consistently higher than 7 degrees Celsius. When choosing the right tires, drivers should think above all about safe, comfortable and economical driving.
There is a wide range of tyres on the market, so it is important to know the differences in performance between models. The choice of tyres can have a significant impact on braking distances, with differences of up to 15 metres on wet roads at 80 km/h and 7 metres on dry roads at 100 km/h.
Although the initial cost of purchasing high-quality summer tires may seem high, the long-term benefits include not only improved performance and comfort, but also significant cost savings.
Twice as many kilometers mileage
Auto Bild compared the mileage of 20 summer tires and ranked the premium tire Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 first with 63,200 km. That’s more than double the kilometers you can drive with the last-placed tire in the test.
Auto Bild also compared the price per 1,000 km of 20 summer tires, with the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 being the cheapest tire at 8.70 €/1,000 km. That is around 50% less than the average price per 1,000 km of the seven tires in the bottom rankings (16.14 €).3 That means a saving of around 50% per 1,000 km of driving distance.

Better not to use winter tires in summer
When temperatures rise in spring, Goodyear recommends drivers switch to summer tires. Recent tests show that braking in wet conditions from 80 km/h at 15 degrees Celsius with winter tires means a braking distance of around two meters longer than with summer tires.
The ADAC also recommends replacing winter tires with summer tires in summer temperatures, as otherwise the risk of accidents increases.
“The warmer the temperature, the greater the difference in performance,” explains Laurent Colantonio, Regional Technology Director EMEA at Goodyear. “Driving with winter tires in summer leads to differences in the dynamic behavior of the vehicle, while the specific compounds and design of summer tires guarantee optimal wear, which has a positive impact on mileage, efficiency and sustainability.”
Tips for tire care
Only with proper care and maintenance can drivers get the most out of their premium tires and save money in the long run. Here are some helpful tips from Goodyear experts:
- Check your tires regularly for damage and make sure they have the minimum tread depth required by law. Worn tires suffer particularly in wet conditions because the tread, which is designed to drain water, has worn away.
- Tire pressure should be checked once a month. Tires with too little air pressure not only consume more fuel, but also increase wear and tear and, in extreme cases, can cause tire damage. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on tire pressure. You can find this information in your vehicle’s owner’s manual, for example.
- Avoiding contact with curbs and driving over potholes will increase the lifespan of your tires. Choosing the most efficient route and maintaining a consistent speed will also help, and will also reduce fuel consumption.
