‘Thank you Cannes Film Festival for premiering our film here. Please don’t make us wait for another 30 years for another Indian film.’
Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia said this on stage at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on Saturday after receiving the festival’s second most prestigious award.
Payal’s film ‘All We Imagine As Light’ was awarded the Grand Prix Award here. With this, Payal has become the first Indian filmmaker to win this award.
Payal was honored on stage by American actress and film producer Viola Davis.
After winning the award, the star cast of the film hugged Payal on the stage itself.

The film was premiered on 23 May under Cannes’ most prestigious category ‘Palme d’Or’. This was the first Indian film to be selected in this category after 30 years. Earlier in 1994, the film ‘Swaham’ was nominated in this category.
